HUMMINGBIRDS
Hummingbirds have long symbolized joy and happiness and not only are they beautiful but they play a key role around our homestead. Fluttering their wings they help pollinate our farm by going from flower to flower. They need energy to keep them going and can drink up to two times their body weight in liquid per day!
Without the help of hummingbirds we would not have the gorgeous spring blooms we have on earth day. Without adequate food and areas to pollinate hummingbirds run the risk of going extinct. I cannot even image! If they were not around it would add a huge workload to bee’s and other pollinators placing everything in our fragile ecosystem at risk if they cannot pollinate. I never realized how important they were!
I decided to make a hummingbird feeder for earth day and wanted to use materials I already had on hand. With the help of a Ball® Home Canning jar, some naturally dyed water ( I added beet juice) and some crafty DIY inspiration, I turned a jar into an eco friendly hummingbird feeder.
MATERIALS NEEDED
Ball® 4 oz. Jar
Lid and band
Power Drill with 1/4” bit
1/4” Eyebolt with nut
Metal wire for hanging
Hummingbird nectar ( One part sugar with 4 parts water. Dissolve on stove)
NOTE: You don’t have to color the water ( I did it lightly here with natural beet juice so you could see the feeder better) but the brightly colored red water is not good because the hummingbirds can over eat.
HOW TO
Wash and clean jar, lid, and band
Place lid onto a piece of wood and drill 5 holes. One center, and 4 around the sides. ( the side holes are what the hummingbird will stick its beak through to drink) They’ll sit on the ledge of the jar and dip their beak down.
Insert eyebolt through center hole and attach with nut.
Pour hummingbird liquid up to the very top
Close jar
Attach wire through the loop and hang!
* Refill as needed ( every few days) and wash jar every week to ensure all stays clean!
GIVE AS A GIFT
You know I love giving gifts so why not make extra feeders and give to friends and family in honor of earth day? It’s such an easy DIY and a wonderful family activity as well! Find a beautiful spot to hang your feeder and enjoy watching these perfect beautiful birds come eat!
It’s best if you only hang one in a general area. If there are to many they till fight for food! 1 keep them happy and content.
