Back in February I began planning out our summer garden! My plan was to do lots of flowers and some veggies and essentials too. Then Covid 19 hit and we started to re-think the garden, What if we had to fully sustain ourselves on what we grew? Should we grow extra to share with others? The biggest answer definitely seemed to be YES. Grow more veggies than we had planned so we can share more and can, freeze, etc more as well. But why even grow food to begin with?

WHY DO A GARDEN?

There is a definite trend now to grow your ow food. Because of the pandemic people have wanted to start victory gardens and go back to the roots. But gardening can be SO much more!!

Gardening can lower your blood pressure, it can help with depression. There have been studies that show the many physical benefits of gardening. Fresh air, sunshine, and oxygen are SO good for you! So don’t just start a garden to grow food, start it because it is literally healing to the should and good for you!

! My suggestion would be just start something and start small. Don’t let it overwhelm you. If you have the time and are able start with 1 garden bed. Only plant things your family and you love and will eat. To make it simpler, if you don’t want grow seeds just buy some local seedlings from the nursery. Places now are delivering or you can even just pick up.

Don’t grow 100 tomato plants just start with 2. Baby steps but forward moving steps. That’s the goal.

WHAT ARE WE GROWING RIGHT NOW?

Our late winter early spring garden has the following growing

1.) Spinach

2.) Lettuce

3.) Radishes

4.) Carrots

5.) Turnips

In the greenhouse we also have basil, cilantro, and even more lettuce!

Our seedlings for summer include tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, beans, etc! THere’s so much I want to plant! Just have to be able to keep track.

Our garden beds are still a little bit messy, but I’m happy we’ve got some of these veggies already in the ground and growing! So fun! The greenhouse has been my happy place through all of this uncertainty. The smell of fresh plants and warmth are very welcoming every time I walk in.

AN EASY WAY TO START

Something I have found that is super easy to grow and almost fool proof is using seed tape! See a picture of my lettuce from the garden and greenhouse below! It’s seeds spaced out perfectly onto paper tape. You literally just place it in the ground, cover it, water it, and voila! Things start to grow! See a few pictures below of our seed tape growing in the garden and in the greenhouse.
